Presentation: Each capsule contains Omeprazole USP 40 mg as enteric-coated pellets.

Description: Omeprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that inhibits gastric acid secretion by blocking the proton pump of the gastric parietal cell. It is effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers, especially for erosive reflux esophagitis.

Indications:

  • Benign gastric and duodenal ulcers, including NSAID-related ulcers.
  • Erosive reflux esophagitis.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Dosage and Administration:
  • For reflux esophagitis: 40 mg daily for 8 weeks.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Initially 60 mg daily, up to 180 mg in divided doses.

Contraindications: No known contraindications.

Precautions & Warnings:
  • Before treatment, rule out gastric malignancy.
  • Use in pregnancy only if no safer alternative exists. Avoid during breastfeeding.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated. Mild effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal colic, dizziness, and headache.

Drug Interactions:
  • May delay elimination of diazepam, phenytoin, and warfarin, requiring dose adjustments.
  • No interaction with theophylline, propranolol, or antacids.
